Canada proposed compositional requirements for infant foods and foods currently regulated as foods for special dietary use

On October 23, 2024, Health Canada issued a notice of proposed revisions to the composition requirements for infant foods and foods currently regulated as foods for special dietary use, with a comment period ending December 23, 2024. Major revisions include:

 

(1) Mandatory addition of α-linolenic acid, selenium, inositol, L-carnitine and other nutrients to infant formula (0-12 months for consumption), and the dosage range is specified, such as the minimum content of L-carnitine in the final product is 1.2mg/100kcal, and the content of inositol is 4-40mg/100kcal, etc. Optional added nutrients to increase docosahexaenoic acid, nucleotides and taurine, erucic acid content in the total fatty acids should not exceed 1%;

 

(2) The energy value provided by the dietary total replacement food for weight loss people is 800-1200kcal/ day, etc.;

 

(3) Stipulate that infant cereal foods should be forced to add Fe, the content range of the final product is 14.3-26.7mg/100g, the selective addition of nutrients to increase vitamin D, the content range of the final product is 3.3-5μg/100g, etc.
