On October 21, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revised the Food Safety Standards (Food Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, with the revisions taking effect from May 1, 2025. The main contents include:
- Revised relevant index requirements for some dairy products. For example, the minimum milk fat content in concentrated milk has been revised from 30% to 27%;
- Revised relevant indices for olive oil, etc.;
- Added indices for rice products, including organic impurity content ≤0.1% and inorganic impurity content ≤0.2%;
- Added indices for rice flour standards, such as moisture content ≤14%;
- Added relevant index requirements for rice fortified with nutrients, as shown in the following table;
- Added product standards for pickled eggs (including pickling salinity of 2%, processing methods, basic ingredients, etc.);
- Revised some indices of fish oil product standards (with fatty acid content in concentrated fish oil ranging from 35-50%), as shown in the following table;
- Specified processing steps for refined fish oil (with trans fatty acid content in refined fish oil ≤2%); fish liver oil labels should indicate the naturally occurring Vitamin A and Vitamin D content, and all fish oil and fish liver oil labels should indicate the EPA and DHA content;
- Added an index for iron filings content ≤125mg/kg in the standards for dried parsley and tea;
- Established the maximum addition amount of oligofructose in some foods;
- Added microbial indices for bread yeast, as shown in the following table.
