Comprehensive South African media reports that the first batch of 24 tonnes of Tanzanian Hass avocado has successfully arrived in China, with a total value of about 18,500 US dollars. The avocados left on 28 October and arrived in Hong Kong on 18 November after more than three weeks of sea transport.
The first shipment of avocados was made by Tanzanian grower Africado in conjunction with the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), Westfalia of South Africa and Mr Avocado China. The avocados have now arrived at Mr Avocado's South China ripening and distribution centre to be processed and put on the shelves for sale.
The avocado is the first fresh fruit from Tanzania to gain access to the Chinese market. Tanzania is the third largest producer of avocados in Africa after South Africa and Kenya. Tanzanian avocados are mainly exported to Europe and the Middle East, and now China is expected to be its next major destination.In 2023 Tanzania exported 26,826.3 tonnes of avocados, with an export value of about $73 million.
In early November 2022, during Tanzanian President Hassan's state visit to China, China and Tanzania co-signed a protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Tanzanian fresh avocados to be exported to China.On 15 November, the General Administration of Customs issued an announcement that Tanzanian fresh avocados complying with the relevant requirements would be allowed to be imported with immediate effect.In March 2024, the Customs Service carried out a compliance inspection of Tanzanian plantations, and on 8 15, 2024, published a list of six orchards that passed the inspection.
