On 8 November 2024, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) approved a genetically modified (GM) potato, BG25, for use in food and a processing aid based on a GM strain of bacteria.

The transgenic potato, developed by SPS International in the US, combines low reducing sugars and reduced browning with resistance to potato late blight through the expression of VNT1, AMR3 and BLB2 proteins and the endogenous genes silencing Vlnv and Ppo. The transgenic potato has been approved for cultivation in the United States. Glucoamylase process aids expressing the glucoamylase derived from the transgenic strain of Aspergillus niger were developed by Novozymes Japan for use in brewing, baking, starch processing and distilled alcohol production processes.
