Korea proposed to increase the types of foods with mandatory nutrition labeling

On December 30, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea issued Announcement No. 2024-604, proposing to amend parts of the Labeling Standards for Food Products, etc., with a comment period ending on February 28, 2025, with the following main contents:

  

(1) Permission to affix stickers with Korean labeling matters related to exported food products printed in foreign languages;

  

(2) Addition of granulated sugar, butter, and processed animal food categories to the products with mandatory nutrition labeling;

  

(3) Adjusting parts of the Labeling Standards for Food Products, etc. in accordance with some of the revised matters of the Korean Codex Alimentarius and Codex Alimentarius, and maintaining consistency in the use of terms, definitions, and so on;

  

(4) To develop a format for nutritional labeling of food products consisting of a combination of unprocessed primary agricultural and forestry products, livestock products, aquatic products and processed foods.
