Russia has produced more than 24,000 tons of surimi as of mid-November 2022, about four times the 6,000 tons produced in the same period last year, according to data from the Russian Cod Association (ADM). Total production in 2021 will be 8,400 tons. Production is expected to be about 28,000 tons this year.

Experts explain that Russia's surimi production has increased nearly fourfold this year, largely due to an increase in the number of fish-processing trawlers. Until last year, no surimi was processed in Russia, and in recent months the country has ramped up spending on equipment to produce surimi.

In May 2022, 21 out of 24 processing facilities in the Far East and northern basins (including the White Sea, Barents and Kara Seas) cost a total of 25.6 billion roubles. The second phase of the project, which involves the construction of 8-10 large plants, is scheduled to start within the year.

The production of surimi on board has increased tenfold to about 14,000 tons.

The Russian Fish Producers Association (VARPE) said that Russia, as one of the largest producers of pollock, has great prospects in the field of surimi production, and increasing the production of this product will not only reduce the dependence on imported ingredients, but also improve the quality of the product.

The raw material of surimi in Russia mainly comes from China, Japan, India, Thailand and Vietnam. Experts point out that when the production of surimi reaches 28,000 tons, it can meet the demand of the domestic market and also be exported. It is expected that the production of surimi in Russia will reach 50,000 tons in the next three years.
