On January 23, 2023, WHO released a report on the global elimination of trans fat in 2022. The report sets out the world's progress towards the 2023 target for the global elimination of industrially produced trans fatty acids (TFA), highlighting achievements over the past year (October 2021-September 2022).
The report shows that 5 billion people worldwide remain underprotected from harmful trans fats, which increase their risk of heart disease and death. And put forward two best practice policies: one is that the country enforces a limit of 2 grams of industrially produced trans fat per 100 grams of total fat in all foods; the other is that the country enforces a ban on the production or use of partially hydrogenated oil (major source of trans fat) as an ingredient in all foods.
