The export of Ecuador shrimp to China in May increased significantly, reaching nearly 70,000 tons

According to the latest data from the Ecuadorian Aquaculture Chamber (CNA), Ecuador exported 107,419 tons of frozen vannamei shrimp in May 2023, a year-on-year increase of 13%, and set a record for the highest export volume in a single month.


From January to May this year, Ecuador has exported a total of 496,739 tons of shrimp products, a substantial increase of 19% year-on-year.


In May, the export value of Ecuadorian white shrimp was US$574 million, a year-on-year decrease of 6%. From January to May, the cumulative export volume was about 2.71 billion US dollars, which was basically the same as last year.


In May, Ecuador exported 68,450 tons to China, a sharp increase of 40% year-on-year. Exports to the US market were 15,463 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 15%; exports to the European market were 4,293 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 35%.


In terms of export unit price, the average export price (export value divided by export volume) of Ecuadorian white shrimp in May was $5.34/kg, a year-on-year decrease of 17%. The average export price of Ecuador to the Chinese market was only $5.11/kg, down 18% year-on-year; the average export price to the US market was $6.17/kg, down 14% year-on-year.
