South Korea revised food standards and specifications

On August 31, 2023, the Ministry of Food and Drug of Korea (MFDS) issued Notice No. 2023-56, revising food standards and specifications, which will be implemented from the date of publication. Main contents:

 

New alternative food standards;

 

To establish a new standard of inorganic arsenic in brown rice 0.35mg/kg;

 

Revision of food standards and norms for the elderly. In order to prevent food poisoning in the elderly, products need to be fully cooked before production; Revision of manufacturing standards to allow the manufacture of products in an unheated state;

 

Develop new standards for erucic acid in rapeseed oil. The erucic acid content of rapeseed oil is less than 2%;

 

To formulate new food varieties and standards for food for special medical purposes. To develop new food varieties, standards and norms, such as nutritional supplements for hypertension patients, diet foods for hypertension patients, and water and electrolyte supplement formulations;

 

Revised classification standards for salt types. Deep sea salt is classified as other salt;

 

Revised standard for bacteria of food poisoning in raw food. The microorganism index of Clostridium perfringens was increased in raw food.

 

Newly established and revised pesticide residue limits in food. We formulated and revised the residue limit standards for 87 pesticides, including longomycin.

 

Residual limit standard for new veterinary drugs. The egg antigenic insecticide dicazuril 0.01mg/kg was established.
