On September 22, 2023, Argentina's National Food Safety Commission issued proposals to amend the Argentine Codex Alimentarius (CAA). Some of the revisions include:
(1) Revise the standard of tequila to allow the addition of exogenous food alcohol in tequila, but the alcohol content generated by the fermentation of tequila should not be less than 51% of the total alcohol content. The maximum added amount of exogenous sugar in tequila is 30g/L, but when the added amount of exogenous sugar exceeds 6%, additional instructions should be provided on the product label.
(2) Formulate quality standards for rock salt, such as arsenic and cadmium content <0.5mg/kg, lead content <1mg/kg, etc.;
(3) Formulate sea salt quality and quality standards, such as the sum of calcium, magnesium, potassium content in the product should not be less than 2% (calculated by chloride), water content should not exceed 10%;
(4) Revision of good manufacturing practices (BPA) for foods of plant origin (including fruits, vegetables, spices, mushrooms, etc.), specifically to add mandatory traceability requirements, revision of water hygiene standards for production and processing, etc. The period for comments on these proposals ends on October 22, 2023.
