On 28 September 2023, the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) issued regulations for imported organic food.
To import organic food into the UK, the consignee must be registered in the UK and the imported food must be certified as organic by a UK control machine. If you are the "first consignee", you also need a Certificate of Inspection (COI) to import organic food, even if it is a product or sample that is not intended for sale. When importing organic food into Great Britain from outside the EU, a Great Britain COI is required for each shipment, and the exporter's control authority and the country of export are checked to see if they are on the non-UK Organic Register.
imports of organic food into Northern Ireland from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland must be verified by a control agency, registered with the EU's Trade Controls and Expert Systems New Technology (TRACES NT) and approved by the control agency. Each shipment is subject to an EU COI via TRACES NT.
