On October 20, 2023, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) amended the import conditions for ready-to-eat fish, modifying the BICON case "Fish including caviar, roe, fish guts and fish maw (excluding salmonid fish)" to specify the import conditions for ready-to-eat fish for consumers.
The amendments include: declaration (a) only "pan size" fish that have been gutted and decappered (weighing no more than 450 g each) or fish that have been headless, gutted and salted, dried or smoked require a freezing declaration; (b) If a freeze declaration is not presented or is inadequate, the goods will be inspected on arrival; c, other fish available for consumer consumption do not require freezing declarations, nor do they require inspection; d, the department can carry out spot checks on any imported goods).
