Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated the regulations governing existing stockpiles of three chlorpyrifos pesticide products manufactured by Andromeda, including Pyrinex (EPA Registration No. 11678-58), Chlorpyrifos 4E AG (Quali-Pro Chlorpyrifos 4E, EPA Registration No. 66222-19) and Vulcan (EPA Registration No. 66222-223).
In August 2021, EPA withdrew all chlorpyrifos MRLs on food, i.e., banned its use on all food and feed crops; in December 2023, a court decision overturned this rule and EPA subsequently reinstated all chlorpyrifos residue limits.
In the latest existing stockpile rule, EPA allows the sale and distribution of existing stocks of the chlorpyrifos insecticide Pyrinex until 30 June 2024; existing stocks of Chlorpyrifos 4E AG/Quali-Pro Chlorpyrifos 4E and Vulcan may be sold for distribution until 30 April 2025; and the sale and distribution of Chlorpyrifos 4E AG/Quali-Pro Chlorpyrifos 4E and Vulcan in food, food processing and manufacturing The use of existing stocks of Chlorpyrifos 4E AG/Quali-Pro Chlorpyrifos 4E and Vulcan in food, food processing and manufacturing establishments is permitted until 30 June 2025, subject to product labelling requirements; non-food uses are permitted until the exhaustion of existing stocks, but are also subject to labelling requirements.
The sale, distribution and use of any existing stocks of these three products will be prohibited after these deadlines, except for export and proper disposal.
Implementation of this provision, which is intended to provide for an orderly transition and absorption of current stocks of chlorpyrifos pesticides in the United States, will be closely monitored.
