On November 14 and 30, 2023, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the deregulation of 1 GM soybean, 2 GM corn, 4 GM cress, 1 gene-edited mustard, 2 gene-edited corn, 1 gene-edited mustard, 1 gene-edited banana, and 10 gene-edited soybeans.
Among them, 1 transgenic corn was resistant to corn rootworms and resistant to phosphine oxalate, 3 gene-edited soybeans were able to improve flavor, and 6 gene-edited soybeans were able to increase yield. The other products did not reveal the character information.
According to APHIS's risk assessment, these GM and gene-edited crops are unlikely to pose a higher risk of plant pests and diseases than their unregulated counterparts. As a result, APHIS deregulated it, but it is still regulated by the EPA and the Food and Drug Administration.
