On 7 March 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the gene-edited potato JA36 for food and feed. The gene-edited potato was able to produce more tubers by knocking out the Gn2 gene through CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology.

The FDA concluded, based on the submission, that the composition, safety and other parameters of the gene-edited potato are not materially different from similar products currently on the market and, therefore, would not involve premarket review or require FDA approval.

In addition, permission from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Agriculture would be required prior to marketing food or animal feed derived from the gene-edited potato JA36, and the marketing of the product would be subject to the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard.
