According to "Financial Times", McDonald's since 2020 for the first time suffered a decline in global sales. Consumers around the world have been turned off by repeated price increases for burgers, fries and soft drinks.

The fast-food chain's comparable sales in the second quarter reportedly fell 1 percent year-over-year, with sales declining at both overseas restaurants and McDonald's U.S.-based restaurants. Although second-quarter revenue of $6.49 billion was essentially unchanged from the same period last year, net income fell 12 percent to $2.02 billion, which was weaker than expected.

In announcing the results on Monday, the company's chief executive Chris Kempczinski said that consumers "are being more selective in how they spend their money."

The report noted that the price of restaurant meals has been rising in recent years, with the U.S. Dining Out Index rising 30 percent from mid-2019.

McDonald's has raised prices, the report cited, with McDonald's U.S. President Joe Erlinger acknowledging in an open letter in May that the average price of a Big Mac Meal in the U.S. has risen 27 percent since 2019, to $9.29, although he said the price of several of the items on its menu have risen less than the rate of inflation. And the company and its rivals are offering discounts to lure repeat customers, with McDonald's $5 burger, nuggets, fries and drink package in the U.S. late last month boosting traffic, according to Placer.ai, which tracks location data on mobile devices.

McDonald's has more than 40,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries worldwide, the report said. about 41 percent of the company's $25.5 billion in revenue last year came from the United States. However, fewer customers caused its U.S. sales to fall 0.7 percent in the second quarter. The decline in global comparable sales, which covers company-owned and franchised restaurants that have been open for at least 13 months, marked the first decline since the last quarter of 2020.
