On September 14, 2021, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) issued Decree No. 289 to formulate bee products regulations. The main contents include:
(1) Terms and definitions;
(2) Production requirements for handmade honey products. The source of raw materials, any stage of the production process, the technology and equipment that affect or determine the quality and nature of the final product must be mainly handmade, and the final product must be personalized and authentic, and maintain the uniqueness and traditional characteristics of the product. Sensory differences between batches are allowed, the use of industrialized ingredients must be restricted to the minimum necessary, and the use of dyes, flavoring agents and other non-edible additives is prohibited;
(3) Production process and training requirements. The production process should meet the requirements of the official good agricultural practices; the quality index and characteristic requirements of the produced bee products; and the technology requirements of the production process.
This regulation will come into effect on October 1, 2021.
