Brazil issues paper clarifying issues on vegetable oils and fats

On January 18, 2021, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) issued a document clarifying the issues concerning vegetable oils and fats, concerning Resolution (RDC) 481/2021 and IN87/2021. There are 51 questions and answers covering different aspects of the topic, including general questions about vegetable oils and fats and requirements for modified and compounded vegetable oils. The main contents include:

(1) Vegetable oils and fats are products mainly composed of fatty acid glycerides, and may contain small amounts of other lipids;

(2) Resolution 481 applies to virgin, cold-pressed and refined vegetable oils and fats for human consumption, and also to compounded and modified vegetable oils and fats. Not for use with margarine or other lotions and products whose ingredients contain vegetable oils, etc.

(3) The labeling stipulated by the resolution is mandatory to be used on the label;

(4) The labeling sequence of the compound oil components;

(5) imported products are treated the same as domestic products;

(6) Hygienic requirements that vegetable oils and fats must meet;

(7) Oil and fat regulations applicable to dietary supplements;

(8) Relevant regulations will take effect on March 17, 2022.
