Japan Revises Food Labeling Standards

On March 30, 2022, the Cabinet Office of Japan issued Decree 21 to revise the "Food Labeling Standards". The main contents of the revisions include:

(1) Since high-oleic acid genetically modified soybeans can be cultivated by conventional means, they are no longer included in the list of genetically modified foods, and foods containing this ingredient need not be labeled as containing genetically modified ingredients;

(2) In view of the fact that genetically modified mustard has passed the safety review and has been put on the market, the food containing this ingredient should be marked with the claim of containing genetically modified ingredients on the label;

(3) The content determination method of some nutritional ingredients (such as fatty acids) on the food label is revised, etc.

The amendments take effect from the date of publication.
