According to Nguyen Trong Thanh, deputy director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy of Natural Resources and Environment under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, disposable plastic bags will be completely banned in Vietnam from 2030, even at bazaar. At present, manufacturers are studying replacement technology to meet market demand and comply with national regulations.
Nguyen Trong Thanh said Vietnam has recently shown many positive signs in broadcasting and promoting restrictions on the use of plastic bags.
Notably, Vietnam has launched a pilot project called PLASTIC ALLIANCE, which aims to reduce the sale and use of single-use PLASTIC bags in Vietnam, promote the use of environmentally friendly shopping bags by retailers and spread sustainable green lifestyles.
So far, the alliance has attracted the commitment of 16 retailers and the active support of partners. In the course of the project, the members of the Retailer Alliance signed a cooperation agreement to negotiate the alliance’s action plan and publicity plan to carry out online and offline retailer-targeted publicity campaigns to raise consumer’s awareness of reducing the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic products. The alliance’s campaign has been actively supported by retailers and partners, passing a message of limiting the use of plastic bags and single-use plastics.
According to a survey by the Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Strategy, 104,000 single-use plastic bags are used in supermarkets every day, equivalent to 38 million a year. Of the 48 supermarkets surveyed, 46 offered free plastic bags.
In order to strengthen the management of plastic waste, Vietnam has issued a number of regulatory documents, which aim to replace ordinary disposable plastic bags with environmentally friendly plastic bags and packaging in all shopping malls and supermarkets by 2025, and gradually reduce the production and use of non-degradable plastic bags and single-use plastic products in daily life.
In particular, Vietnam will ban plastic bags from 2030 and replace them with eco-friendly ones.
In order to successfully achieve the stated goals, Vietnam has issued several documents, such as: "Strategy for Integrated Solid Waste Management to 2025, Vision to 2050"; Directive no. 33 of the Prime Minister on strengthening the management, recovery, utilization and Disposal of plastic waste; National action plan on sustainable Production and Marketing for the period 2021-2030; Environmental Protection Law of 2020; Decision no. 1316 of the Prime Minister of the Government on the approval of the Proposal on Strengthening the Management of Plastic Waste in Vietnam., etc.
