South Africa to develop standards for fish and related aquatic product names

On 1 July 2022, the South African Bureau of Standards issued a consultation paper to develop standards for fish and related aquatic product names.  Main contents as below:  

(1) Scope.  Apply to names of fish and invertebrates sold in the South African market and to naming requirements when new species are added;  
 
(2) Definition.  Species name, common name, wild catch and other 6 related definitions;  
 
(3) Requirements.  If no general name or alternative name exists, the general name of the aquatic products should be reflected in the label;  If the name or species is not listed in Annexes A or B, the label should identify the official name in any publication;  If no such names and species names are also found in these publications, an official application for scientific names should be submitted to the relevant national authorities in the country of origin;  

(4) Label requirements.  The labels of aquatic products include the scientific name and general name, the name of aquatic products (including processed products) or the list of ingredients to distinguish between farmed and wild fishing, the product name can be called "X" and followed by the general name, "X" represents the fishing country or the origin of the fish;  All imported species should include the country of capture in the generic name and be labelled in accordance with the requirements specified in the relevant national legislation, SANS289 and SANS458.  
 
The feedback period for the consultation document is until August 29, 2022.
