On 15 July 2022, the Singapore Food Agency issued amendments to the Food Hygiene Regulations 2022 with effective date of 31 July 2022. The main contents include:
(1) To add provisions in the Food Hygiene Regulations allowing the use of Pathogen Reduction Technology (PRT) on meat;
(2) PRT refers to "Any antimicrobial substance that, when applied to food, reduces microbiological levels in food", including chemical and biological material (such as organic acids, oxidants, quaternary ammonium compounds and proteins), usually in each operational steps of the slaughterhouse or meat division factory under form of rinse, soak, spray or washing and applied to carcass and meat cutting;
(3) Allow 21 approved PRTS to be applied to meat;
(4) Specified conditions of use of PRT: PRT can only be used for raw meat that has not been salted or preserved, and is applicable to imported or locally produced meat.
