On August 10, 2022, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) released three annual reports including the National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program. The main contents include:
(1) National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program and Chemistry Food Safety Oversight Program Annual Report (2018 to 2019). The report, which summarizes test results of fresh fruits and vegetables collected between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019, generated millions of results from more than 115,000 veterinary drug, pesticide, heavy metal and contaminant residues tests conducted on approximately 16,800 monitored samples. The test results showed that the vast majority of the food in the market met the Canadian chemical residue standards, and the overall compliance rate was determined to be 96.7%.
(2) Children's Food Project Annual Report(2020). In the 2020 test, 175 samples of children's food were purchased, including children's cereals, yogurt, yogurt drinks, puddings, fruit snacks and cereals/cereal bars. All samples were analyzed for pesticide residues and metallic elements (except yoghurt and yoghurt drinks) and yoghurt. Yoghurt drinks and pudding samples were tested for aflatoxin M1 and veterinary drug residues. The test results showed that the overall compliance rate of pesticide detection was 99.3%, 1 sample did not meet the Canadian regulations but was not considered as a safety risk. No health risks were found for heavy metals, aflatoxin M1, veterinary drug residues, etc.
(3) Undeclared Allergens and Gluten in Sauces and Salad Dressings (May 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021). Of 297 samples tested, 2 were found to contain unlabeled allergens, such as beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), casein, and sesame.
