India issues 2 revised regulations on food safety standards

On September 1, 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued two revised regulations on food safety standards.

Among them, the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Declaration) Amendment Ordinance (42505/2022/ regulation-FSSAI) will take effect from March 1, 2023. The main content is added the contents that can be declared in the labels of four types of vegetable oils in the list of original standard edible vegetable oil label and allowed advertising claims : olive oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil and safflower oil (ex: the label of olive oil can claim that it is rich in linoleic acid; α-linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid, which helps to maintain normal cholesterol level);

The Revised Regulation on Food Safety and Standards (Nutritional Food for Infants) (42518/2022/ Regulation-FSSAI) will take effect from October 1, 2022. The main contents are as follows:

(1) Revise the vitamin B12 content requirements for infant formula and formula foods for older infants and young children;

(2) Make it clear that no vegetable oil, linoleate, vitamin E, starch, specific food additives and selective ingredients can be used in infant formula;

(3) Two kinds of packaging gases, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, are added to the additives for formula milk powder for older infants and young children, which can be used according to GMP requirements.
