According to Yonhap News Agency and Korea News Service, on June 18 (local time), SAMYANG Food Co. decided to object to the Danish government's decision to recall some of its hot chicken flavor ramen.
On June 11 (local time), the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) took a local recall on the grounds that the capsaicin content in three products, namely 3x Spicy hot chicken flavor ramen, 2x Spicy hot chicken flavor ramen and Spicy soup ramen, from SAMYANG Food was too high, which could lead to acute poisoning. It is reported that this is the first time since the launch of SAMYANG hot chicken flavor ramen that a recall has been ordered due to the spiciness.
SAMYANG Foods objected to the way the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration made the determination. A company official explained, "Because the pasta itself does not contain capsaicin, the weight of the pasta should be excluded when measuring the content."
According to the re-determination of the capsaicin content of the three recalled products by SAMYANG Food and an authoritative Korean testing organization: the weight of the liquid sauce packet is 31 grams, and the accurate capsaicin content is around 25 milligrams; while the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, when issuing the recall order, took the overall weight of the product of 140 grams as the standard, and calculated the capsaicin content to be 113 milligrams, which is close to four times the error, and that is the the key reason why the product was recalled.
SAMYANG Food will reportedly submit an objection to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration based on this determination.
In addition, SAMYANG's hot chicken flavor ramen exported to China were also exposed to have excessive peroxide value and a shelf life of 12 months, while locally bought hot chicken flavor ramen in South Korea have a shelf life of only six months. The incident has also sparked consumer concerns within China.
On the evening of June 17th, the official microblog of SAMYANG Foods, "SAMYANG Hot Noodle Bar", made a response, saying that recently there were false rumors that the peroxide value of SAMYANG hot chicken flavor ramen had exceeded the standard, and that the products sold by SAMYANG Foods complied with the national standard, and attached a video of the official inspection report of SGS, the professional testing organization.
