EU issued requirements relating to the importation of animals and animal products from third countries

On 25 March 2024, according to the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/887 amending the requirements for the import of animals and animal products from third countries. The main contents are:

 

(1) Milk and milk products from sheep or goats need to come from farms where no cases of typical sheep pruritus have been diagnosed for at least the last seven years or where all animals confirmed to be suffering from typical sheep pruritus following the diagnosis of a case of typical sheep pruritus have been killed and destroyed, etc;

 

(2) Regular sampling and analysis of compound feed for farmed animals other than pigs, aquaculture and fur animals is required to verify the absence of unauthorised ingredients of animal origin;

 

(3) The Regulation shall enter into force after the 20th day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, shall be binding in its entirety and shall be directly applicable in all Member States.
